Educational tool for alphabet substitution
One of the basic tools for learning simple cryptography is the blank slide
ruler, such as the Aristo 90197 slide ruler. It was used for training new
cryptanalists in basic cryptography by allowing them to play with shifted
and scrambled alphabets.
|
The image on the right shows a close-up of a typical Aristo slide ruler.
It is made of plastic and contains only vertical bars, for separation of
the letters. The letters themselves should be written with a pencil.
This makes the tool usable for any type of alphabet susbsitution, as well
as for foreign language. Especially Russian was a very popular language
during the Cold War.
