SafeNet
SafeNet, Inc. is an information security company, based in Belcamp (Maryland, USA). The company was founded as Industrial Resource Engineering (IRE) in 1983 by two NSA Engineers. In 1987 the name was changed to Information Resource Engineering, and in 1989 the company went public.

In 1995, IRE produced its first Virtual Private Network (VPN) called SafeNet. The product became so popular that in 1999 the company was renamed to SafeNet as well.

SafeNet has grown immensly over the years, mainly due to a large number of acquisitions from 2002 onwards.

The most notible acquisition by SafeNet was that of Rainbow Technologies (formerly Mykotronx) in 2004. At the time, Rainbow was twice the size of SafeNet. The former Mykotronx division is now called SafeNet Government Solutions and is still based in Torrance (California, USA).

In 2007, SafeNet itself was acquired by Vector Capital, but continued to operate as an autonomous company, albeit a private one. SafeNet is currently the 5th largest vendor is the security market and the 3rd largest provider of information security solutions in the world, with annual revenues of approx. $500M [1]. On 26 February 2010, the Embedded Security Division of SafeNet was acquired by AuthenTec (USA) [2].

Acquisitions
  1. MediaSentry was acquired by SafeNet in 2005, but was sold to ArtistDirect in 2009.
  2. Alladin Knowledge Systems was bought in 2009 by SafeNet's parent company Vector Capital, but was moved under the Safenet umbrella in 2010. It has since become a wholly owned subsidary of SafeNet.
  3. Pijnenburg Custom Chips BV (later: Securealink) became part of the SafeNet Embedded Security Solutions Division, that was taken over by AuthenTec on 26 February 2010 [2].
