SafeNet, Inc. is an information security company, based in Belcamp (Maryland,
USA). The company was founded as Industrial Resource Engineering (IRE) in 1983
by two NSA Engineers. In 1987 the name was changed to Information Resource
Engineering, and in 1989 the company went public.

In 1995, IRE produced its first Virtual Private Network (VPN) called SafeNet.
The product became so popular that in 1999 the company was renamed

In 2007, SafeNet itself was acquired by Vector Capital, but continued to
operate as an autonomous company, albeit a private one. SafeNet is
currently the 5th largest vendor is the security market and the 3rd
largest provider of information security solutions in the world,
with annual revenues of approx. $500M [1].
On 26 February 2010, the Embedded Security Division of SafeNet was
acquired by AuthenTec (USA)
[2].
